Facebook is testing “Facebook Offers”. A new product that you can’t miss because it absolutely dominates the newsfeed with three big link buttons to redeem an offer or share it. Facebook has played around with deals before but they didn’t get it right and the concept was killed in 2011… or apparently shelved and reinvented now.
A few things worth noting: offers are redeemable in-store (not online – at least not this one) and the offers are emailed to your non-Facebook email address (the one you use to log into Facebook – not Facebook mail). It appears Facebook’s walled garden is relying on some tools from outside of Facebook to complete the transaction.
This is the first version I’ve seen. Facebook Offers are being tested in partnership with select brands… Macy’s has over 20K offers claimed and a few hundred shares. It will be very interesting to see what the redemption rate is with an offer like this valid for only three days. Additionally it will be interesting to see what kind of response “Facebook Offers” gets from Facebook users seeing ads and now offers in the newsfeed.
Facebook has received some criticism lately as major brands are dropping the platform as a place to do commerce. Social commerce or “F commerce” as it’s being called, doesn’t pay off (on Facebook) for most brands. I’m sure Facebook wouldn’t mind a successful “offers” product taking off as the company goes public.
